Does weight lifting stunt height growth for teens at ages 14 and 15?
Q: This is a rumor that I have heard of and I fear that it will stunt my height growth if I continue lifting.I lift 10-15 Ibs of weights.
A: No! Weight lifting has not been shown to have any adverse effects on practitioners above the age of 10. After 10-12 for MOST people the bones have been properly formed to their full potential (although more growth will occur, it is not within the “growth plates”) and should not cause any issues with bone growth or development.
Can lifting heavy weight at age 14 stunt my growth?
Q: i know people get asked this all the time but i need to be sure and any examples of people who didnt get their growth rate stunted by lifting weights at a young age would be great. My body type is not anything like arnold swarzenegar(cant spell his last name though). I dont want to gain muscle like him but want to gain some muscle so i wont be so skinny.
A: It might stunt your growth – but it WILL damage your bone and tendon structures. There have been a number of medical reports put out over the last ten years, all of them agree on two things: one, lifting of heavy weights (more than 50lbs, or 25lbs each hand) can adversely affect overall growth rates, causing an average teenage male to lose as much as 4 – 6 inches off what would have been his/her normal height.two, lifting heavy weights or high numbers of reps of moderate weights can do permanent damage to the bones, tendons and ligaments of people experiencing adolescent growth spurts (teenage years). Don’t let your coach talk you into it, you might win him or her one or two trophies, but you’re the one who will look like a hunched over dwarf for the rest of your life. Be smart and take care of yourself.
