How do I work out if it’s cheaper to boil a kettle using gas or electricity?
Q:
A: That’s a tricky question to answer with just kettle either on Gas or Electric! If you are heating both from a hob (rather than an electric kettle) and that everything else is even then I would say Gas is cheaper and quicker. If however you mean an electric kettle that you plug in and a kettle to put on a gas stove then you are comparing 2 different things and there are a lot of other things to consider. For example, the electric kettle element is inside the water and the kettle is insulated – where the gas is outside the gas kettle and the metal isn’t insulated. This means that you have to consider things like heat loss from the kettles to work out the energy you have to put in and then things get complicated!!However, with the electric kettles insulation I would say (without doing complicated sums) that the electric kettle is cheaperHow do you work it out? Well the easy way would be to turn off all the gas in the house, put 1 litre of water ina pan. Take a reading of your gas meter and then go back and boil your water. Turn the gas off and take a second meter reading – this will show how many therms you have used. A check of the gas bill will give you the amount you have spent on that. Then do the same with the electric kettle. Turn off al the electricity in the house, do a meter reading and then boil the kettle (without turning on anything else). When the litre of water has boiled take a second meter reading and this will show how much electricity you have used – again check the bill for the costs. Now you should see that one is more expensive than the other to boil water.Oh, did you know that wood chippings are cheaper than both? (If you have a posh wood burning oven like an Aga..)

Q: Can i boil raw bratwurst like a regular hot dog. I know hot dogs are already cooked but will it work the same as boiling other meats or will it fall apart and be gross and unevenly cooked?Any suggestions i am trying to avoid the smoke and smell of frying or BBQing?
A: yes you can boil them, or if you want them to have great flavor, here’s a recipe for you, you don’t have to grill them, just serve them out of the crockpot.Honey&Mustard Brats10 fresh bratwurst sausages1 green bell pepper, sliced into long strips1 red bell pepper, sliced into long strips1 large sweet onion, sliced into rings and separated2 cloves garlic, sliced2 bay leaves1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring2 cups honey mustard barbecue sauce1 (12 fluid ounce) can beer, or as needed10 hoagie rolls, split lengthwisePlace half of the bratwurst in the bottom of a 5 quart slow cooker. Arrange half of the green pepper, red pepper, and onion over them. Layer the remaining bratwurst over the top, and top with the remaining red and green bell peppers and onion. Throw in the garlic and bay leaves. In a separate bowl, mix together the honey mustard sauce, liquid smoke and beer. Pour into the slow cooker. Add more beer if necessary to cover everything in the pot. Cover, and cook on Low for 4 to 5 hours. . Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, and lightly oil grate. Remove bratwurst from the slow cooker, but leave onions and peppers inside. Place bratwurst on the grill and baste with some of the remaining honey mustard sauce. Turn occasionally until slightly charred. Place bratwurst on rolls, and use tongs to pull out a few of the onions and peppers from the slow cooker and drape them over the sausage.
