What’s Hot in Jewelry: Platinum the Trend at the Emmy Awards

Style, grace and elegance were the night’s keywords as Hollywood’s top actors and actresses gathered for the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. At least 16 different actresses flashed platinum jewelry, making platinum the evening’s hot jewelry trend.

The trend should be little surprise: statistics from the industry association Platinum Guild International indicate that 81% of pre-engaged women prefer platinum for their own engagement and wedding jewelry. Moreover, 36% of brides-to-be are disappointed when they receive a non-platinum engagement ring. So when actresses get to choose from scores of designers and pieces as they plan their Emmy ensemble, it’s no surprise that so many increasingly demand platinum.

Gwyneth Paltrow dazzled in a mid-riff baring dress and platinum earrings with seven carats of black and white diamonds, two platinum and diamond bracelets, and a platinum ring with diamonds and black onyx.

Also wearing platinum and diamond earrings was Drew Barrymore, whose Van Cleef & Arples pieces sparkled.

Minka Kelly opted for platinum diamond drop earrings and platinum rings from Tiffany & Co.

Platinum’s distinguishing characteristic is its density, which places it among the most durable and enduring precious metals. The natural white tint of platinum also provides advantages over tint-casting metals such as white gold, which reduce the sparkle of the gemstone or diamond. Platinum’s composition also allows it to hold diamonds and other precious stones more securely than other precious metals, making it ideal for pairing with fine jewels.

Other actresses flashing platinum included Gretchen Mol, who wore a 12.90 carat platinum and diamond ring by Fred Leighton. Mol also sported vintage platinum bracelets with diamonds, jade and black enamel. Actress Julie Bowen wore pieces by designer Neil Lane, including multiple platinum rings with black and white diamonds. Neil Lane’s pieces also were the choice of actresses Nina Dobrev, Jayma Mays, and Colbie Smulders.

Actresses Amber Riley and Mireille Enos both wore Chopard platinum, including Enos’ 97 total carats of diamonds in multiple platinum bracelets. Riley’s more subtle but highly refined 13-carat platinum and diamond ring also wowed. Still more subtle was actress Ellie Kemper’s Chopard 8-carat platinum and diamond stud earrings.

Fred Leighton’s Art Deco sensibilities were showcased in Taraji P. Henderson’s platinum and diamond earrings, paired with a platinum dome ring with rock crystals.

Platinum’s natural white color never fades or alters, even with extensive wear, making it not just the trend of the season, but a legacy that can last generations.
