Weight Loss and Pregnancy

For those women who can pull on their pre-pregnancy jeans the day they are discharged from the hospital after delivering, struggling with weight loss is a concept foreign to them. For the rest of us, weight loss and pregnancy are two terms that just don’t fit into the same sentence. If you are like me, it literally took years before I could get back into my pre-pregnancy clothing after my first pregnancy.

How Much Weight Should I Gain?

While most doctors recommend not gaining more than 35 pounds during pregnancy, which can be easier said than done. My first pregnancy had me ravenous for food and I just couldn’t eat enough to be satisfied. The result was an extra 65 pounds that just wouldn’t budge. I had no energy and felt that I couldn’t keep up with the constant demands of raising twins.

How Can I Lose Weight Quickly?

There is no magic trick for losing weight quickly. As a matter of fact, the slower and steadier the pace of weight loss, the easier it will be to keep it off. With my second pregnancy, I gained only 40 pounds and slowly but surely started losing the weight after he was born. It took about 8 months before I was in my pre-pregnancy clothing, but I never felt hungry or lacking in energy.

If you are having trouble finding the right combination of weight loss and pregnancy, talk about it with your friends, family, or doctor. Most every mom that I know has had a bit of difficulty losing her pregnancy weight, but she has eventually returned to her pre-pregnancy weight when following the recommendations of her physician. As for those women that leave the hospital in their skinny jeans, well, let’s just call them lucky because they definitely aren’t the norm.
