Top Five Reasons Why You May Want to Think Twice About Recommending Your Child for a Job

Despite what the experts say there are still plenty of people who are out of work. Many friends and family members have been recommending others in order to help them get a job. Before you go ahead and recommend anyone for a job, including your own children however you may want to think twice about it. Below is a list of the top five reasons why you may want to think twice about recommending your children. Some parents seem to think that they are actually doing their kids a favor by getting them their first job, but this may not always be the case.

Ruin your reputation

Lets face it there may be several things about your child that you may not know. For example you may think that they are a good hard worker, however if you have never actually taken the time work with them it can be a different story. If you have a good reputation with your company, you don’t want to put this at risk. It’s important not to allow your emotions as the parent to cloud your judgment.

Too close for comfort

Having family, work with you in the same company can actually end up being too close for comfort. If you live with an individual and work with them, this may start to cause stress in your relationship. If they are not going to be working directly with you, than it may be ok, just make sure that you take the time to research exactly who they will be working for and where.

Learning to stand on their own feet

Getting their first job for them, will not enable them to learn how to find employment on their own. Sometimes it can prove to be beneficial to allow young adults to go through rejection before finding a job on their own. Remember that you can not protect them forever.

The value of hard work

Finding and keeping their own job will help them to learn the value of hard work. Usually most companies will start many at an entry level opportunity until they prove themselves. Allowing your child to do this on their own will certainly help them to build character, and learn the benefits of working hard as they climb to the position that they really want.

Look better to the employer

If the potential employer finds out that the person applying for a job has a relative into eh company, but did not use them to help get their foot in the door this may be appealing. The employer may see that they want to get the job on their own merit and not on their parents.
