The Christmas Present that Wasn’t

Today I had a luncheon,
With someone I adore.
I drove many miles to see him,
My best outfit I wore.

He was late, as usual,
I waited on the stair.
He called and said he’d be there,
This is more than I can bear.

We talked about two hours,
And had a lot of chats.
And then he said he had to go,
I was surprised at that.

He paid the bill and asked me,
For $5.00 to share the cost.
I didn’t get a Christmas present,
I really do feel lost.

I do not think I’ll see him,
At least for quite a while.
I’ll think of him occasionally,
And reminisce and smile.
