Steeler Management Playing with Kryptonite Concerning Ben’s Thumb

When I was a child I thought that George Reeves was Superman. As I grew older I realized there really wasn’t a Superman. It’s just fiction. Now at 57 years old, it’s rumored Superman lives in Pittsburgh. His real name is Ben Roethlisberger. Ben broke his thumb last week against the Bengals. At least that’s what we have been told. Ben says bravely that he will not miss any time and fans shouldn’t worry. Years ago, I broke my thumb. While not an athlete by any stretch, my experience and common sense says Steelers fans should start worrying.

Fact: This is the second time Ben has broken his right thumb (throwing hand). As reported. This makes proper healing that much harder.

Fact: Tennessee Volunteer quarterback Tyler Bray broke his thumb on 10/9/11 and is expected out four to six weeks. His coach commented: “He has a broken thumb, so you can’t grip the ball and throw it the way you do when you don’t have a broken thumb,” Dooley said. “It’s going to take some time. It’s like everything around here. We want immediate fixes. His thumb is not fixed. You don’t just put magic serum on it and he can go throw like he did five weeks ago. Dooley let his frustration show. When you break a thumb as a Quarterback, the whole team feels it.

Fact: In 2010 Josh Freeman broke his thumb in the preseason. He missed three weeks for his recovery and opened the regular season against the Browns. Josh is a big, tough, younger version of Big Ben. Freeman completed his first two passes. But on second and 5 from the Kansas City 13, his hand hit a helmet during his follow through of an incompletion to tight end John Gilmore. On the next play, he fired incomplete to Sammie Stroughter. “The next play, I couldn’t really grab it or grasp the ball too well,” Freeman said.

Either Ben is in fact Superman, or he just using a heavy dose of cortisone or pain killers to fool himself into the part. If there is no blue spandex suit with a red “S” under his clothes he should be out for at least two weeks. One week being the bye week. The second week would be against the struggling Chiefs. Why risk a season ending injury complication. It’s almost as sad as the black night in Python’s search for the Holy Grail. Left with no arms or legs he still wanted to fight. Finally, if the injury report is accurate Ben just could be super dumb about his thumb. Let’s hope not.
