Rachael Yamagata City Winery

If music be the food of love, play on! Or so says singer songwriter pianist Rachael Yamagata. Yamagata, with Mike Viola, was recently at downtown’s home for amazing artists in an intimate venue City Winery for two nights beginning December 21.

Yamagata is known for her haunting, ethereal, charged lyrics and sultry melodies. Fans of singer/songwriters like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, and Leerone will find plenty to latch onto with Yamagata’s music.

Many of her songs hearken back to another time. A song like “The Other Side” evokes the haunting breathiness of Carole King. At the same time the songs curiously ambling but still pushing forward strum evokes many familiar folk names from the ’70’s and ’80’s. When her voice rises to catch the bridge with “You were supposed to come with me all I ever wanted was to be with you” you feel it.

The moody haunting introductions for songs like “Brown Eye” ring with hints of obscure Enya or even darker sounds like Massive Attack and Portishead.

Yamagata is playing Thursday night at City Winery, 155 Varick Street in Manhattan. To see the rest of her schedule check out her website.
