Philadelphia’s Independent Movie Theaters

A trip to your local multiplex on most weekends proves that watching movies in a dark theater and on a big screen is a passion shared by young and old alike. And for some, the large crowds and blockbuster movies provide for a fun family experience. But for others who prefer independent, foreign and restored films, an independent movie theater may be more appropriate.

In the Philadelphia area, there are several independent movie theaters that cater to the artistic crowd.

With three center city locations, the Ritz East, at 125 South Second St., the Ritz Five at 214 Walnut St., or the Ritz at the Bourse, on 4th St. between Market and Chestnut, retain their independent theater feel even though ownership transferred over to the Landmark Theater Group in 2007.

You can purchase tickets online at www.tickets.landmarktheaters.com with a Visa, American Express or MasterCard. A $1 surcharge per ticket will apply. Admission prices are $9.50 for all shows after 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and $9.00 during the week. Children under six years of age are not admitted and an adult must accompany those from age six to 16.

Located in the heart of Jenkintown, only minutes outside of Northeast Philadelphia, the Hiway Theatre is a one-screen film house with a history dating back to 1913. Recently renovated, and member supported, the non-profit theater is dedicated to showing first-run films and restored classics.

Admission prices are $5 for members and $10 for non-members. The Hiway accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover, and tickets can be purchased online. Visit their site at www.hiwaytheatre.org to learn more.

Like the Hiway, the Ambler Theater is a member supported, non-profit movie house. The theater is located at 108 E. Butler Avenue in Ambler, Pa., and is situated about 25 minutes outside of Northeast Philadelphia. The theater has special shows aimed for children each Saturday afternoon, along with regular appearances by local filmmakers who offer group discussion.

General admission prices $4.75 for members and $9.75 for non-members. More information can be found at www.amblertheater.org.
