Ideas for Decorating a White Contemporary Living Room

A white contemporary living room is a blank slate. When walls and furniture and light and bright, the decorating options are endless. Color and visual appeal can be added with vibrant throw pillows, live plants, contemporary wall art and more. It does not have to look and feel sterile and cold. Come up with a color scheme that will add drama and interest to the space, and it can look and feel warm and welcoming without appearing overdone.

I had a white contemporary living room in my first home. The walls were eggshell white, and the large windows made the space exceptionally bright. I wanted to find methods of decorating that would tone it down while adding interest and vibrant coordinating hues. I incorporated color, texture and design, and I transformed the living room into a contemporary masterpiece. Decorating was fun, and the outcome was better than expected.

Use a Live or Faux Plant as a Coffee Table Centerpiece

Add color and life to a white contemporary living room with a splash of green. When decorating a horizontal space, consider adding a single plant. Use the coffee table as a plant stand. The floral display will become the centerpiece of the furnishing and quite possibly the centerpiece of the living room.

When decorating my white contemporary living room, I added a white jug style vessel that was filled with snowball blooms. I took the cuttings from a beautiful snowball bush in my backyard. They looked amazing. The greenery added life to the living room, and the white blooms added a touch of natural beauty to the space. I kept live cuttings in the vase as long as possible, but when they were no longer available I purchased high quality faux blooms to take their place.

Add Color and Comfort with Throw Pillows

A sofa and loveseat that just about blend in with the walls and flooring might be comfortable, but they are not visually impressive. A white contemporary living room does not have to be completely void of color. On the contrary it can be quite vibrant. Accessorize light colored upholstered furniture with throw pillows.

A single green and white floral arrangement was not enough to add life to my white contemporary living room. I found eye catching throw pillows at a local department store. They were a buttery shade of yellow, patterned brown and white, and rich coral. They went together beautifully, and I placed them along the backs of the furnishings. Decorating was a breeze after buying the pillows. The colors were the inspiration for the rest of the decor.

Decorating a White Living Room With Vibrant Works of Art

After choosing the color scheme for the living room, I began searching for works of art. I found a gorgeous floral wall hanging. It was a giant fabric chrysanthemum bloom in a sunny shade of yellow. I was fortunate to find one in coral as well, and I used the blooms when decorating the longest bare wall.

The contemporary living room looked amazing with the floral wall hangings, but I was not finished with the decorating scheme. I purchased a tabletop lamp that appeared to be made of stacked sheets of wood. I also added a wooden pedestal designed from a log. The bark was still in place, along with the plant and floral wall art, it helped to successfully combine contemporary style with natural decor. I topped it with a contemporary sculpture of a woman wearing a coral dress and a floral hat. The decorating accessories coordinated beautifully, and it was the finishing touch in my modern living room.
