I Restored My Automotive Headlight Lenses in Less Than 20 Minutes

One of the last items I crossed off on the honey-do-list before relocating to Pittsburgh was to deal with the dangerously cloudy headlight lenses on my wife’s 2006 Toyota Camry. In Florida, my Camry’s lenses (headlights, taillights, turn signals and markers) are easy targets for the elements — namely the sun’s UV rays.

The 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System is designed to give the “Average Joe” an easy and affordable way to repair their vehicle’s plastic lens surfaces. The restoration kit contains various “sanding pads, pad holders, buffing pads, polish and detailed instructions, it includes everything users need to turn their household drill into a low cost solution to this dangerous automotive problem.”

My years of maintaining automobiles, both professionally and as a part of my chores, didn’t make a huge difference in this DIY vehicle maintenance project. As easily as the sun targets the lenses, you too can reverse the sun’s damage with minimal effort, cash and mechanical ability.

Steps involved

Using the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System is easy. First, using the painter’s tape, mask off the surrounding area immediately adjacent to the work area, being sure to cover even the tiniest painted surfaces and rubber gaskets abutting the plastic lens. The sanding and polishing will remove the paint and/or damage the gasket if not protected.

Next, using the spray bottle, wet the hazed lens surface with a generous misting, them sand the cloudy plastic lens surface in a two-stage wet-sanding process with the enclosed sanding pads until the surface is smooth.

Afterwards, polish with the 3M plastic polish (included in the restoration system), and buff with the buffing pad to the desired level of clarity.

Conclusion

It’s just that easy! Having tried similar products over the years, I have found that the 3M Headlight Restoration System is the real deal. This kit is the easiest, most effective headlight restoration kit I have every used.
