How to Use the Hearing Accessibility Feature on the iPhone

Apple has been known for making products that everyone can enjoy and use. Apple has an accessibility menu that addresses a variety of challenges consumers may have using a traditional cell phone. The Hearing section of the accessibility menu makes sure that if you are hearing impaired, you have the tools available to enjoy your iPhone and never miss a call.

This is for anyone who is hearing impaired, or anyone who has a job where they need to keep their phone on vibrate or silent.

How to use the iPhone Hearing Menu to Never Miss a Call

Select the “Settings” menu Select “General” (3rd block down, 1st option, has same icon as “Settings”) Select “Accessibility” (6th block down, last selection in block) Scroll down to Hearing section (2nd section) and slide “Custom Vibrations” on Slide “LED Flash for Alerts” on Go to top left of page and tap “General” then “Settings” Select “Sounds” (2nd block down) Slide both “Vibrate” options to “ON” Scroll down to “Vibration Patterns” and tap “Vibration” Scroll down to “Custom” and tap “Create New Vibration” Tap any vibration pattern you like, press “Stop” when done and “Play” to try it out Tap “Save” (upper right corner), name and save the vibration

Assigning vibrations to contacts

Go to your contacts list on the iPhone Tap “Edit” Scroll down to “vibration” (4th block) and tap Scroll to down to “Custom” and choose desired vibration

Note: Using these settings will require more battery power than the traditional phone ring.

The Result

If you get a call while your phone is in your pocket, you will be able to identify the caller by the vibration pattern you created instead of having to take out your phone and check it.

You also turned on an LED Flash for any messages or alerts you may get (iPhone 4 or higher). If your phone is not in your pocket and you cannot hear it ringing, the LED Flash alert will notify you of any messages by flashing. It is a good practice to always place your phone face down, so you can see the phone when it flashes.

Whether you have a hearing impairment or a really bad habit of not remembering to take your phone off of vibrate, the hearing accessibility feature on the iPhone is a useful tool that helps you stay connected.
