Overview
A church has many different positions of leadership. The pastor guides the congregation members in their faith. The deacons handle the daily business of the church. The associate pastors spend one-on-one time with parishioners to help them grow and overcome their individual problems. The church choir director brings the congregation together in song. A strong musical background and sound, proven work ethic will put you in the position to rise into this important leadership position.
Step 1
Choose a church that matches your spiritual beliefs. Join that church and attend regularly.
Step 2
Join the choir at your church. Volunteer to help the choir director with small errands and large projects. Ask questions and learn the details of how the choir operates.
Step 3
Learn to read music and play at least one instrument. Playing and reading music will help you to build a solid foundation that will last throughout your career.
Step 4
Study music throughout high school and college. Study and practice independently to widen your knowledge base. Practice daily to improve your skills.
Step 5
Apply for the position of choir director when it becomes available. Keep current with the inner working of the choir so you will be in a position to take over when the current director steps down.

Stay active in your church and its choir. Showcase your abilities without appearing smug. Let the deacons know you can fill the spot when it becomes available.
