“”Natural Resources”” is a hair salon that caters to the natural or chemically unprocessed hair of the African-American community. Located in Rice Village, “Natural Resources” is one of many salons popping up to handle what some say is a trend in hair care & maintenance. They specialize in the application of hair products derived from natural ingredients from their own line “Earth’s Nectar” and healthy hair practices to encourage natural hair growth.
My first interaction was a quite surprising phone call to make my appointment. What surprised me as how professional the receptionist was. For those of us who frequent African-American salons, we know this is unusual. After speaking with the receptionist, I was told I could email pictures for my consultation rather than having to come in for it. My gas tank & wallet appreciated that.
On the day of my appointment, I did not have to wait for my stylist to finish another client or show up (as has been the case in the past). DISCLAIMER: I did have the first appointment of the day. As you walk into the salon, you’re greeted with the pleasant aroma of their handmade product line, “Earth’s Nectar.” The lobby is modern, spacious and uncluttered and as you enter the waiting area, you see this trend carried out through the salon in mellow tones of tan and white. Additionally there is a television hanging from the ceiling for every 2 or 3 chairs.
After a short wait (again I was the first appointment), I met with my stylist who unfortunately didn’t introduce herself to me. We discussed my needs/ expectations and proceeded to the service. The “cool beans” aspect got upped a notch during the shampoo — .they had adjustable sinks! Never again will us tall girls have to essentially lie in the seat to rest our necks comfortably! As the end of my service, an”Earth’s Nectar” product was used but I did not encounter a hard sell from my stylist or the receptionist when I paid for my service.
“Natural Resources” is a breath of fresh air in the African-American salon industry of Houston, Texas. With its quality products, professional stylists & modern d©cor, it is sure to not only give natural hair oriented salons a run but all salons.
