Boy’s Town Model in America’ Public School Behavior Programs

Daily classrooms across America have used the boy’s town model of discipline in relaying behavior modifications within the behavior classroom. The boy’s town model separates behavior into four behavior patterns. the first behavior pattern is adult relations the child can be penalized for not following instructions from an adult. They can also have points taken away for not accepting criticism. Feedback should be welcomed and the feedback should be replied to in a positive manner. Not accepting no for an answer is not allowed in the behavior program. The child must accept all directions from adults or floor staff that they are directly involved with.

The second category of behavior is peer relations. The child is not allowed to sway or be disrespectful or use language that could hurt the feelings of or demean another student in anyway. The child is not allowed to have an appropriate gesture which includes gang signs, body language profanity, or other non-verbal language that might be considered a negative behavior. Teasing is not allowed at all in the behavior classroom. Teasing is simply a way to demean another person and it will not be allowed between peer interactions. There is no arguing or threatening. The students in the behavior classroom should be able to defuse an argument before the argument becomes explosive. Hitting and fighting is a no-no in the behavior classroom. No student should put their hands on another student for any reason.

The third category in a behavior classroom is classroom behaviors. All students must have proper classroom behavior. They need permission to enter a conversation, talk out loud, or doing anything than what is required to do by the teacher. The student should be diligent toward thier classwork and be focused. Homework can be turned and on the day it is due in points will be taken off if the homework is late. The child is not allowed to be noisy or rowdy in the classroom. Good posture and proper manners are used in every aspect of the classroom day. If the child is careless and leaves their desk in a sloppy manner points will be taken away from the child and the child will not receive any more points until the desk area is clean.

The fourth category of the boys town model of behavior is the aspect of school rules. A child may not be late for school or for class at any time. They will lose a substantial number of points for being tardy. The child may not chew gum or candy or have any food in their possession unless it is deemed appropriate by the behavior teacher. Cheating lying or stealing is totally off limits in the behavior classroom. This includes lying or stealing from another classmate or lying or stealing to staff. The child is responsible carry around its point sheet. If the child loses the points they must start back in zero .and earned points towards the reward or behavior level.
