Book Review: “Angels Watching Over Me” by Michael Phillips

This is the first book in the Shenandoah Sisters series and I loved it! I didn’t stop reading until I finished all four books.

The author Michael Phillips does an excellent work telling the story of two orphaned young girls. It portrays the turbulent time following the Civil War when gangs rode through the south, murdering and destroying everything in their path.

Katie, the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, hides when a gang kills her family and all slaves living on their property

Mayme, the daughter of a slave, runs when the same gangs viciously murder everyone on the plantation where she lives.

Katie and Mayme find one another and an extraordinary relationship begins. Young and naïve, the girls bring to the new friendship behavior patterned from their parents. In spite of the different manner in which they were raised they share a universal will to survive

Michael Phillips tells the story from the eyes of adolescents raised in a war torn country with fresh wounds. The reader must be willing to lay aside current society’s position on racism and slavery to fully appreciate the obstacles they faced.

Left with only each other they discover God and grow to depend on His provision. Faith in Him enables Katie and Mayme to defy the odds against them as they keep secrets from the community in order to stay together.

“Angels Watching over Me” is a perfect story of triumph over tragedy. Reading this series will remind you the power of faith, trust and perseverance during the storms of life.
