Q: I have had an abscessed tooth (right upper jaw) for over two years now. When I became disabled I lost my insurance, unfortunately, this happened shortly after the dentist diagnosed this abscessed tooth through xrays, when I went in for a cleaning. The abscess was caused by a cavity that was filled in 2005. I went in for the filling, and during the procedure, my dentist drilled the tooth too deep and said “you may need to get a root canal in the future”. That same day I was in excruciating pain for several hours. Of course, a year later, the tooth abscessed and I have not yet had a root canal done. In addition to this abscess, I have had a gumboil for over a year now, and for some reason, it never drained.My question for you is, how long can I go without getting this taken care of? Secondly, what can I do to get the gumboil to pop or drain? And, finally, can CBC results conclude if this bacterial infection has spread? I am currently on cleocin until I see an endodontist in December.OK, I understand it can become life threatening, however, you did not answer any of the questions.

A: It is very unlikely that your dentist did anything in replaceing the crown that would have caused an infection. Why did you have to have the crown replaced? sometimes people get decay around the crown and that can cause an infection. If the decay occures below the gumline the dentist cant always see it. Also, its possible that you cracked the tooth under the crown. That is always an issue with rootcanaled teeth and it can happen when the temp crown is on. When that happens it can allow bacteria down into the root so that it can cause infection. But, main point here, is that baring the dentist doing something terrible, you getting an infection is an unfortunate situation but not something that he/she would be responsible for. You can see if they will give you some antibiotics and it might clear up. Also, i dont know if you are a female, but they have found that women are often more sensitive to metals in their mouth, so maybe if your crown has metal under it, it could be causeing some of the problem.

I have an abscessed tooth, and my dentist appointment is almost 3 weeks away, am I in danger?

Q: I noticed my gum was swollen a couple weeks ago, but no pain till the last 4 or 5 days. I called the dentist this morning and told him and the earliest he can see me is June 15th, today is May 26th. I know if left untreated an abscessed tooth can have fatal complications, I’m worried that is to long of wait. I have a 9 day supply of amoxicillian and he told me to take it, that there was nothing he could do till after I had taken it for 10 days anyhow. What do I need to do? Am I in danger of further complications by waiting a couple weeks?

A: Take the antibiotics and rinse every 2 hours with a warm saline solution. If you don’t notice the pain and swelling getting better in 3-4 days, then you are going to have to be seen as an emergency patient right away. Good luck.
