Worms for Bait : Tips for Using Live Worms for Bait While Fishing

In this article I’m going to provide a couple of tips for using worms as bait while fishing. I’ve personally been using worms as bait for more than 25 years and have found that there are certain things that make fishing with live worms much effective and enjoyable. When many people think of using live worms for bait while fishing they think of a Styrofoam container, a hook, and possibly a red and white bobber.

Although those items can certainly be used for fishing with live worms, the tips I’m referring to are for those of you who would like to take your live worm fishing to the next level. When using worms as bait there are two things that we need to keep in mind. Number one is presenting our worms in a natural and effective manner and number two is having an effective way of carrying our worms from fishing spot to fishing spot.

Those two things are the tips that I’m referring to for using live worms for bait while fishing.

Presenting Live Worms Naturally – Most live worm anglers attempt to thread their worm onto a single hook to make it look natural. This accomplishes little more than creating what I like to call a “worm ball”. “Worm balls” are not a problem when we’re dealing with small and/or inexperienced fish, but are a big problem for those of you who would like to take your worm fishing to the next level. The best way to present a live worm as bait is to use a set of gang hooks. Gang hooks are just two small hooks tied in tandem, but they enable a live worm to be presented in a totally natural (and very effective) manner. It also provides and extra hook for those pesky “nibbling” fish. Having An Effective Worm Carrier – This tip for using live worms while fishing is mostly for those of you who wade or move from spot to spot while fishing. I know that for me 95% of my fishing takes place in the flowing waters of rivers and streams which means I need an effective worm carrier. Having to look for my worms every time that I need to re-bait is a huge waste of time, this is why I use a bait bag. A bait bag is just a small pouch that hangs from my fishing vest and carries my live worms while fishing. My bait bag is a must when using worms for bait. The concept is incredibly simple, but once you start using a bait bag you’ll wonder how you ever used worms as bait without it! Having an effective worm carrier is a must for a true live worm angler.

If you want to take your live worm fishing to the next level and experience much more fishing success these tips will serve you well. Add them to your fishing repertoire soon, rather than later. You won’t be disappointed, I promise you. These tips have been serving me well for many years.
