Ways Parents Can Help Their ADHD Children

ADHD Children needs special attention from their parents. It is expected from parents to give their children the guidance, understanding and loving environment they need. In cases where children are diagnosed with the disorder, parents must give their extra effort to understand, guide and love their children, as well as to lengthen their patience on them. Children with ADHD need guidance and understanding from their parents and teachers to reach their full potential and to succeed in school. At the same time, teachers must do their duties and extend extra effort to their students having ADHD. By this, the children can perform well at home and in school despite their disorder. Because of the inattention and hyperactivity of the child, family members including the patient may feel anger and disappointment towards the disorder. Family members must learn how to control their emotions so that they may be able to help and give more attention and care to the ADHD patient.

There are psychiatrists or mental health professionals that can teach and help parents on how to properly take care and handle their children considering the disorder suffered. These involved persons also guide the parents and prepare them on the probable problems they may encounter that may affect their child, themselves and the whole family members. This process of learning will give the parents and the children enough knowledge that will give improvement to the behavior, attitude and skills associated to ADHD.

There is a so called Parenting Skills training. This training enables parents to be knowledgeable of the reward-consequence system that is very helpful in their children’s condition. In this system, parents will learn how to give appraisals with regard to the behaviors that will eventually boost their children’s confidence. By this, children will no longer seek for too much attention. There are times when “time-outs” are preferred to be used to handle a child when triggered by his ADHD. A time-out is done by letting the child sit by himself and be out from his upset. This can give him a calming effect.

It is also recommended that parents will join their ADHD children in their activities. For example are their recreational activities that promote appreciation on the child’s strengths and at the same time, help the child overcome his weaknesses. Structuring situations positively also helps. Parents may limit the number of their children’s playmates into 2 0r 3. By this, children will not be overly stimulated. There are also therapies that involve every member of the family. This family therapy educates the family members on how to deal with the ADHD patient and on how to cope with their hyperactivity and inattention.
