Surviving the American Dream

The American Dream is why many people find themselves attracted to this country. For some, it can be the desire to become more than their parents. For others, it is the desire to excel beyond others expectations. No matter the reason for a person’s desire to reach the American Dream there are obstacles that sometimes seem overwhelming.

In today’s society, we are told that everyone is given the same opportunities. Is this true? When you look at this world there seems to be those that are privileged and those that are not. But what is the difference between the two? Is it the drive or is it the family that a person is born in?

Many would say that a family’s achievement gives a person an added advantage, but what about the numerous people who have come from nothing and greatly excel. Their determination and drive gets them to their goal because they believe in the American Dream.

The American Dream is something most would want if they knew it could be achieved. However, it seems as though in today’s world of corruption there is defeat in the minds of many people. After all, how can we excel when there is much talk of financial distress and politician corruption? How do we have hope when it appears that our voices are not heard?

The American Dream can live on, but citizens have to have hope and leaders who hear their voices. Citizens need to have trust that their leaders hear them and want them to exceed. It is like children who want the approval of their parents. When a parent consistent fails to put their child’s needs ahead of their own gain, the child can be complacent in not getting their desires meet. Likewise can a citizen become discouraging in today’s society where many are unemployed and unable to sustain their lifestyles.
