Season 13: Tensions Rise as Aqua Team Joins “The Biggest Loser” Ranch

COMMENTARY | Last week on “The Biggest Loser,” Gail joined her daughter at home after her team sent her home. The teams had to do a challenge in which the winning team got full access to the gym. The losing team found ways to work out without workout equipment. The Red Team won, and Dolvett got to work his people without the distraction of Bob’s Black Team.

Both teams had pretty good weight-loss numbers, proving you can lose weight with or without a gym. Despite her complaining, Conda actually won the weigh in for the Red Team. Dolvett visited the Aqua Team one week shy of their return to the ranch to see if they were able to lose a total of 50 pounds. The contestants also face the excuse, “I’ll never reach my goal.”

This week, “The Biggest Loser” opened with the Red and Black teams returning to the scale. They were surprised to learn of the Aqua Team’s challenge to get them back on the ranch. Of course, Conda rolled her eyes and many other contestants protested their return, thinking they shouldn’t get the right to be on the ranch. Some were really upset to learn that the Aqua Team had immunity for a week.

When Daphne stepped on the scale, she lost 26 pounds, going from 271 to 245. Adrian got on the scale next. He lost 34 pounds, going from 370 pounds to 336. Even though they still have long way to go, you could see muscle definition already. The Aqua Team learned they’d have to work on separate teams. Both wanted Bob, so they rock-paper-scissors for the trainer. Daphne got Bob and the Black Team, while Adrian worked with Dolvett and the Red Team. Though they had immunity, their weight still counted for the team.

They got to know their new teams. I thought the Red Team was not very open to Adrian, even to the point of rudeness. The team questioned how many hours he said he worked out at home. Adrian claimed to work out all day, 14 hours. I thought it was funny how they didn’t believe how hard he worked at home when some of them barely lost the same amount of weight on the ranch. Of course, Conda has the most complaints. Kim joined Conda in the displeasure. The guys and Nancy were a little more willing to see what happens.

The Black Team had tension because half of them voted for Chris last week at the elimination. Bob walked into the tense situation. He told the team he didn’t want any attitude. He explained to Chris that he understood why the guys voted for her to go home. Daphne wondered what she got herself into because she felt the tension. Bob then gave Daphne her first ranch workout. Bob took his team through an intense, timed circuit. Daphne kept up with her new teammates.

Adrian worked with the Red Team and Dolvett for the first time on the ranch. They kept comparing his first workout on the ranch to their first workout. It’s like they forgot that he’s been working out at home for a month and lost 34 pounds. The Read Team had never worked out or not worked out for a long time when they walked through the gates. Adrian proved he was meant to be there when he went across the monkey bars. While other people congratulated him, Conda was being her usual bratty self. Does she like anyone? Adrian seemed incredibly uncomfortable.

Dolvett talked to Adrian privately. Adrian revealed how he and his wife lost a child who was born prematurely at six months. He got a chance to hold the baby before she died. He said he ate to get rid of the pain. Later, he was rushed to the hospital with chest pains and started walking. Adrian weighed more than 400 pounds and walked away 50 or 60 pounds at home before trying out for “The Biggest Loser.” There’s no doubt he has the motivation to change his life.

The teams arrived at the beach for their challenge. Daphne and Adrian talked about Conda and her disrespectfulness toward him. In essence, Daphne told her brother to let her comments roll of his back. I was surprised at how immature Kim was acting. The complaining was becoming a distraction to the Red Team. Each week, she seems to find something wrong with someone on the ranch.

Alison explained their challenge. There were balls of various colors lined up in front of the teams. Two players from each team had to bounce a ball on a trampoline and get it over the wall to teammates waiting with a net. Each size ball had a point value. The first team to 100 won the challenge. The winning team could choose one player from each team whose weight wouldn’t count at the weigh in. The Black Team pulled ahead first but started missing balls. The Red Team eventually won.

Mark confronted Conda and Kim about their attitude toward Adrian. Nancy told the women that they were being childish and to stop gossiping. Conda accused him of saying things he didn’t say. (It’s not the first time she’s done it). Personally, I think Conda is just one of those people who can’t live without being surrounding with unnecessary drama. Adrian was trying to avoid conflict.

Dolvett, who knows the Red Team and Conda, asked Adrian how his week went. He got the team together to clear the air because Adrian didn’t say anything. Dolvett told them that the way the team acts could affect their numbers on the scale. I thought Adrian’s actions at the last-chance workout were a reaction to his hurt feelings.

No one had large numbers at the weigh in. Because they won the challenge, the Red Team chose the people whose weights would not count. They picked Nancy for their team and Megan for the Black Team. The teammates complained that Daphne and Adrian lost one and two pounds, respectively. However, none of the contestants lost more than 10 pounds. The Black Team lost only 27 pounds total, for a 1.72 percent weight loss. The Red Team didn’t fare any better, only losing 29 pounds for 1.53 percent.

The Red Team went to the elimination room after deliberation. I was disappointed that they voted for Nancy. She worked hard to draw the team together despite the internal tension. I honestly hoped they’d send Conda home. Even in the elimination room, Kim and Conda took offense at anything Adrian said. At home, Nancy weighed 178 pounds, an additional 18 pounds.

The low weight-loss numbers on the scale could have been due to the changes in the ranch’s environment, as well as the continued tension caused by Conda. It’s hard to loss weight when the body is stressed and the environment is toxic. This entire season has been marked by low weight loss by all contestants, not just the two new team members. I wonder if Bob and Dolvett scratched their heads because of lack of results. We will see what fresh batch of drama Conda will bring next week.
