Preparing Kids for an Extended Stay at Their Grandparents’ House

If you live close to your own parents or in-laws, you may take advantage of this close proximity and head out to dinner or a movie regularly, using the grandparents as a babysitter. From time to time, you may even make plans for a longer getaway, such as a weekend away or even a full vacation without kids. These extended stays at a grandparents’ house can be highly anticipated by both grandparents and your kids, but you will find that everyone will be far happier if you take just a few steps to prepare for the visit. Here are some ideas:

A Bag of Fun. The grandparents no doubt have some fun ideas for spending time with their grandkids, but you will want to send your kids to their grandparents’ house with a bag of fun things to do, too. While your kids may love their video games, you also want to consider packing a few activities that the kids can do with their grandparents, such as games or puzzles.

A Little Cash. Grandparents sure do love to spoil their grandkids, but they also often are either preparing to retire or are already living on a fixed income. So by all means offer them a little cash to cover your children’s meals at restaurants, tickets to the zoo or a movie, and other fun activities they can do together.

Kitchen Fun. Many kids, boys and girls alike, love to bake in the kitchen with their grandparents. You can buy some mixes, sprinkles, and more so everyone can enjoy exploring their creative side in the sweetest way possible.

Comfort While Away. Even kids who are very close to their grandparents can get a little homesick away from you and their own home. Plan ahead for this by packing a few of their treasured items like a special stuffed animal, a special blanket they sleep with, or even just the pillow off of their bed.

While you no doubt are busy planning your own fun times during your break away from the kids, you may find that everyone has a great time when you plan for the kids’ time at their grandparents’ house, too. Consider some of these tips when making your plans, and you will find that your kids feel right at home and have a wonderful time with their grandparents while you are away.
