My Top Eight Winter Beauty Secrets

Winter weather can wreak havoc on your appearance, but most of us simply don’t have the time to create a complicated beauty routine just for winter. These winter beauty tips are simple enough that anyone-including this busy work-from-home mom-can get them done.

Tip #1: Cure dry elbows with old fashioned Vaseline. Slather your hard elbows with Vaseline before bedtime and cover them (I use cut up tube socks-cheap and easy!) before going to sleep. In the morning, your elbows will be super smooth!

Tip #2: Kiss that flaky face goodbye by simplifying your beauty regimen. Store away all of your harsher beauty products, especially those made with alcohol, and use natural soaps and cleansers to avoid drying out your skin. Be sure to moisturize at least twice a day, or more as needed.

Tip #3: Cover up to protect your face from painful cold and windburn. You make look silly, but wearing a ski mask in extreme cold weather protects your skin from getting reddened by windburn. What are a few strange looks when it comes to protecting your face?

Tip #4: Keep your lips irresistibly smooth… using your toothbrush! Avoid that instinctive reaction to lick chapped lips and keep them smooth by gently exfoliating your lips with an ordinary toothbrush every night. Keep several tubes of lip balm in your purse at all times, and don’t hesitate to use them!

Tip #5: Skip hot baths and showers until springtime. Hot water steals the moisture from your skin, so taking hot baths and showers dries out your skin very fast. Instead, take lukewarm showers and baths and wait until springtime when the air is humid to enjoy a hot soak.

Tip #6: Use yellow undertones to conceal red winter skin. If your skin has gone red from windburn, try out a concealer with a yellow undertone beneath your foundation. The yellow undertone will help balance out the redness much better than skin-tone concealer.

Tip #7: Avoid brittle hair by putting away the blow dryer. Blow dryers and other hot styling tools rob your hair of much needed moisturize. Stick to towel drying your hair in the winter, and massage in plenty of leave-in conditioner if you must use heated styling tools.

Tip #8: Drink more than enough water. Eight glasses a day is the typical recommended amount of water, but in the winter when your skin and hair are being robbed of moisture at every turn, drink up a few extra glasses each day to keep yourself hydrated and looking great.
