Michigan’s Golden Coast

Visitors can get to the golden coast via the I-94 or US-12 roadways as well as by Amtrak which stops in New Buffalo. Red Arrow highway runs parallel, less than a mile from the coast from the state line through St Joseph. This busy thoroughfare is home to a variety of antique shops, art galleries, unique eateries and wineries. The area farmlands are protect from frost by the warm water of lake Michigan which is ideal for grape growing resulting in a wealth of local wineries. Visitors will find a variety of cuisine throughout the region from small eclectic cafes, family style restaurants to fine dining venues requiring proper attire and a reservation.

This stretch of coast line has golden sand beaches where visitors can stroll for miles. Large public beaches in the area include New Buffalo, Weko Beach, Grand Mere State Park, Warren Dunes State and Silver Beach. There are also a number of smaller township beaches located along residential streets that allow beach access to visitors just north of New Buffalo. Be prepared for large crowds on holidays and weekends during the summer with weekdays being busy but more manageable. The larger parks offer many amenities including restroom buildings, large parking areas, concession stands and lifeguards during select hours.

Accommodations for visitors to the golden coast range from rustic rental properties to upscale waterfront hotels. The rural stretch between New Buffalo and St Joseph is filled with rental properties on the lakefront or within a short walk and often including beach association rights to the renter. You have the choice of rustic, standard houses and beach chic mansions depending on your budget level. New Buffalo and St Joseph have many hotel options near or away from the lake. Four winds Casino located less than a mile east of downtown New Buffalo offers upscale hotel accommodations, several eateries and a large gaming floor.
