Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors known for his wide range of roles throughout the years but the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor never looked better than at the New York premiere for his new movie “The Rum Diary” on Tuesday.
The A-list actor wore a gray blazer, tinted glasses, and blue nail polish as he talked about the film based on the novel by the late Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson that opens this Friday.
The book’s original manuscript was actually found by Depp himself while he was visiting the writer’s home. He told Reuter’s,”I found the manuscript (in his home). We were reading it, sitting cross-legged on the floor and he said, ‘We have to make this into a film and produce it together.’ I said ‘Sure,’ never knowing that we would full-on go through with it.”
The two had been friends ever since the actor portrayed Thompson in the 1998 movie “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” At Tuesday’s film premiere Depp explained the personal meaning of the film to him and those who knew the late writer.
“It’s a beautiful sort of closure for me, it’s a beautiful closure for Hunter’s, all the people who were close to Hunter ’cause we worked on this from basically 1997 until now,” he told Access. “We lost Hunter in 2005 and we ended up getting it done and it’s all he wanted. It’s all we wanted, so we did it,” he said.
