How to Turn a Dream Job into a Real Job

There is a myth that you can’t do what you really love and make a decent living. We tend to choose a job based on the market rather than our interests. Or even worse we allow a job to choose us by default. We fall into a field through a first job and continue to work in that job or field as a matter of comfort and convenience. We settle for what is practical and leave our dreams behind in the dust.

The key is to get that first job and open those doors that ultimately lead to your dream job. It may take some additional education and training, but it can happen if you’re willing to give it a good old college try.

Know What You Want

Know the exact title of the job you want to call your own. If you have a very specific goal in mind it’s a great deal easier to plan the steps you need to take to accomplish your goal.

Begin the Education Process

If you need additional education to realize your dream job get moving. Time and money constraints can seem insurmountable but there may be options available to you. Do a little research to see what may be available. Community colleges may offer the program you need. Take a few classes at a time and apply for grants. Online education is another viable option. Online schools will sometimes work with you by providing financial aid.

Get Experience

Technology is an awesome tool. But too much reliance on technology is not so awesome. Good old fashioned networking with real people in the real world will go miles further than submitting resume after resume online. Many doors only open in a particular field if you’re already working that field. You meet people who are in your field of interest, make connections, and build relationships.

If you can afford to begin with an entry level position in your field go for it. You may only be able to work part-time and continue with your current job full-time. The point is to look for work in your industry and begin making those invaluable contacts while getting real world experience that moves you closer to your dream job. You may even need to do some volunteer work or an internship in order to get started.

Go Above and Beyond

Finally, look for ways to go above and beyond in your new industry. These are great resume builders that demonstrate your commitment to your profession. Write articles and books that relate to your field. Join industry associations and become an active member by attending events or volunteer to join committees. Sign up for trade publications in your field and learn the buzzwords, keep abreast of the latest industry news, and check out their classifieds for possible job leads that may move you closer to your goal.

The only way to reach your dream job is to take charge of your own career. Know what you want to do and learn how to do it. Develop a plan of action and take action. Your dream job can become your real job if you apply yourself and stay the course.
