Some people who fish go through the same routine each time they go. They bait their hooks, use their best poles, and set up more than one. Other people don’t have a routine. They do this, they try that, and they experiment with various poles, bait, and techniques. Are you one of those people? Do you like to try different things when it comes to fishing? That’s great. There’s a fun way you can fish while kicking back and taking it easy. Once you get your bait in the water you’ll have a visual notification if you get a bite.
You know those glow sticks that kids often play with? You can find them at nearly any dollar-theme store and you can often get several small ones for a buck. The sticks are ordinary when you get them, but when you snap the stick, it lights up. The light will last for a couple of hours or so. Use those glow sticks to make a cool fishing rig with that visual notification.
Take a roll of twine and tie a piece of it onto a 20oz soda bottle or water bottle. Although you could use a larger bottle – like a 2 liter – it’s more difficult for the fish to pull the bottle under – a necessity for the glow stick bottle to work. Tie the twine around the neck of the bottle so that you have a long piece hanging off of the bottle, with the other end being the twine roll. Tie a hook onto the long strand that’s hanging off of the bottle and put whatever bait you want to use onto the hook.
Open the lid of the bottle, snap a glow stick, and place it inside the bottle. Throw the bottle out into the water. Take the roll of twine and place it on the bank. Tie this off if it isn’t on a roll. If it is on a roll, push a stick into the ground and slide the roll over it. Push the stick in at an angle that points away from the water so that if you catch a fish the twine won’t unwind.
You can sit back and take it easy while your glowing bottle works for you. You’ll know you have a bite if the light disappears because, when you get a bite, the pop bottle will go underwater, and the light will not be visible. Whenever you get a bite just pull the bottle in by the twine.
You can fish with just the glow stick bottles or you can use them along with your regular fishing poles. Once you get your first fish, though, you’ll love the glow bottle which alerts you every time you get a bite.
