Do You Have a Tongue Magnet?

It sounds like a great idea. According to Fox2.com, an 8th-grader wore the neocube magnets as a tongue ring, but accidentally swallowed four of them. She had stomach pain and ended up in the hospital. According to Dr. Donna Eckardt, the magnets can be in different parts of the bowel, but will attract to each other and cut off the blood supply. It can lead to ulcerations or perforations of the bowel.

Possibly the teens thought this might be better than tongue piercing, but seemingly it is just as dangerous. Some may call it a form of art or expression. In fact, body piercing may occur over the eye, nose, ear, breast nipples, navel, or face, but when you put a fake ring inside of the mouth or even inside of the nose that is going a bit far and could be quite dangerous. According to Wikimedia.com, vaginal piercing does occur and frenulum piercing, a type of body piercing under the shaft of the penis does occur also. Ouch! According to Wikimedia.com, tongue piercing is for sexual pleasure for some.

As I watched the “Fake Tongue Ring video from You Tube, the young lady on the video showed how she supposedly used glue on a magnet and placed it on her dry tongue. Now I really do not know how you keep your tongue dry and not have any saliva. That was a mystery to me. I was shocked that she would use glue in her mouth. Teenagers are not thinking about the dire consequences. She claims she twisted the cube and it would come off painlessly. Teenagers are attempting dangerous things and even showing it on You tube.

According to Dr. Anatoly Belilovsky, on nydailynews.com, the magnetic rings if swallowed can even cause blood poisoning. Teens might want to rethink the usage of magnetic rings on the tongue. Magnetic tongue rings are not safe solutions as an alternative to tongue piercing.

These tongue rings are for sale online. They are enticing teens by selling fake glow in the dark tongue rings as well.

Although I have a few friends that have their tongues pierced and wear the rings in them, it is something that I never thought I wanted to do. Some have said to have the ring in their tongue is a part of their jewelry attire. Is it a fashion statement?

The Aztec and Maya are cultures that do tongue piercing, according to Wikipedia.com. Healing of the tongue can be 2-6 weeks, and total healing about 6 months. It seems to me it would be difficult to eat while your tongue is trying to heal.

Possibly, some consider tongue magnets and tongue piercing a body art like tattooing of the body. According to the American Dental Association, tongue piercing can cause increase saliva flow, nerve damage, numbness, loss of taste, and difficulty speaking. These are just a few of some of the harmful effects as the result of tongue piercing. This is serious. Possibly people need to think twice before having that procedure done. Is it really worth it?
