Do Christians Have to Obey the Old Testament Law?

Do Christians have to obey the Old Testament law?

The Old Testament law is no longer binding on believers today. Jesus’ substitutionary atoning death on the cross rendered the Old Testament law null and and void:

Romans 10:4

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”

We are now under the Law of the Messiah:

Galatians 6:2

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

Matthew 22:37-40

37 Jesus said to him, ” ‘ You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

The Old Testament law had one purpose: to convict us of our inability to keep the law and to point us to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha’Mashiach).

Galatians 3:23-25

23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Thanks to Messiah’s glorious work on the cross, we have been reconciled to the Father; we will enjoy His light and fellowship with Him forever and ever.

2 Corinthians 5:21

” For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

Revelation 22:5

” There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”
