Decorating with Yarn: No Knitting Required

Colorful, soft yarns can be transformed into far more than warm sweaters and cozy blankets. With no knitting or crocheting skills, you can put yarns to use in accessorizing your home or when decorating for a holiday or event.

Yarn pom-poms are quick to assemble and can be used in endless ways. Make them in muted colors and toss a handful into a glass bowl in a shabby chic decorating scheme. String many of them together, onto matching yarn or clear fishing wire, and hang them like a garland at an outdoor wedding or party. Glue them onto thumbtacks or magnets to make hanging personal items more interesting, or hang them from your tree at Christmas time.

A versatile yarn wreath can be made to look modern or traditional depending on the yarn chosen, but it’s guaranteed to be a fast and easy project. Purchase a foam wreath base at a craft store and hot glue the end of a skein of yarn to the back of the wreath. Pass the rest of the skein through the center of the wreath and over to the side where it began. Continue wrapping the skein around the wreath form, making each pass as close as possible to the last to cover the form completely. Cut the yarn when you reach the point where you began, and hot glue it to the back of the wreath to secure it. Adorn with faux flowers or beads. For a seasonal wreath, use yarn befitting the colors of the season and attach appropriate objects to the front, whether pinecones for winter or fake leaves for fall.

Purchase an inexpensive vase at a secondhand or discount store and give it a burst of color and character with yarn. Glue the end of the yarn to the very bottom of the vase, then wrap in a spiral pattern upward around the vase. Cut and glue the yarn at the top. Fill with flowers or vibrant, leafy greenery. This project can be altered slightly to make recycled vases: wrap yarn scraps around a clean and dry used soda bottle.

Make lightweight, airy globes with yarn for hanging outdoors or suspending from the ceiling. Inflate balloons to different sizes, ensuring that they all retain a spherical shape. Dip a skein of yarn into a bowl or bucket full of white liquid glue, then wrap the glue-covered yarn around a balloon. Move in many different directions as you wrap. Hang the balloon and yarn to dry while you make other spheres in the same fashion. When the yarn dries and stiffens, pop the balloons and pull them through the globes; the yarn will retain its shape. Hang them with fishing wire for a weightless look.
