Behind the Smile

We go to the mall for something to do, and we see families, and couples holding hands. We look down at our hands, there’s no one there holding ours. What did we do? It’s not fair..

We want a family, to have kids, and read the articles of people killing their own kids, beating their kids, harming them for no reason. We did nothing wrong, why can’t we have them?

We watch tv at home, and see shows of families and married couples, and a fun home life. We look around our empty walls with no pictures, listening to the errie silence. Why does our homes have to be empty?

We go outside, and see the cranky lady across the street spoiling her grandkids. We look around our yard, and see nothing. Why can’t we have a reason for toys in our yard?

We go to the movies to escape from the real world, and get stuck behind the couple holding hands and sitting close. Why wouldn’t anyone say yes to me to come along?

We look at the calender to see the date. Valentines Day, Sweetest Day, Couples Day, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day. Why does there have to be so many days for love, and a constant reminder that we have no one?

We have many thoughts. They are evil, they are selfish, but why do they deserve kids and we do not? We fall in love, we have love interests, but no one shares our affections. Then we are teased and ridiculed by those we know about being single. Do you not understand that we want the same thing? You say that even though we babysit your kids, that we don’t understand what it’s like to raise a kid. You say that we couldn’t handle a kid because a crying baby may frustrate us. Do you not understand that it’s different if it’s your own kid? Do you not understand that even parents get frustrated at their own crying child? Do you truly understand what it feels like to truly want to be loved, to be in a relationship, to see so many other couples, and know that you’ve been turned down time after time again? Do you truly understand the hurt? Do you truly understand the pain? You say you do, but you do not. Do you truly understand that when it comes to this stuff, we feel like we failed?

We want the same thing that everyone else wants. We want to be loved. We want to have someone to hold, to care for, to take care of. We want to feel the warmth of that little hand, and a little face looking up at us and saying, “I love you so much, you are the bestest ever.” We want to come home to something other than an empty house.

The world does not understand us, no matter what they may say or think. The hardest part is trying to put on that smile to the world, and make it appear that we are happy. If we don’t, people say that we are just craving attention, we’re trying to get self pity. You just don’t understand what it’s like to be one of us, and you never will.
