A Sonnet for the One I Wronged

My love, my life, my everlasting joy
I beg and plead an audience with thee.
My shards of shattered heart do I deploy
To turn your eye once more and favor me.

I cannot alter time or change the past
To when your heart did I so harshly break,
So at your feet myself I humbly cast
And pray my tears can amend my mistake.

For in the wind I hear you call my name,
And in the rain I hear your whispers sweet,
And in the trees the leaves cry out the same
And echo God’s refrain that we should meet.

Remorse cannot undo my cruel goodbye,
Yet none have striven as I will to try.
