5 Songs That Should Be Banned From ‘American Idol’

The 11th season of “American Idol” kicked off on Wednesday night on Fox, and it was successful for many contestants who got the pass to go on to Hollywood. Others though weren’t so lucky.

As the show continues and we see more people audition they’re most likely going to pick the same songs that wind up on every season. These songs are over sung, over played, and just downright cliche. With the amount of music that comes out every year its surprising how many people pick the same songs by the same musicians. Here the top songs that should be banned from being sung on “American Idol”:

“I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston…or anything else by Whitney.

Oh come on, do these contestants really think their version of this song, whether it’s inspired by Whitney or Dolly Parton, is going to do this song justice? This song in itself is overplayed due to all of us who had mothers obsessed with “The Bodyguard” soundtrack. Do us all a favor and pick a lesser known song from a different diva.

“Vision of Love” – Mariah Carey

Like Whitney, contestants like to flock to Mariah’s discography of songs, primarily sticking with her first breakout hit. What’s the problem with this? When Mariah first came out with “Vision of Love” most people thought her producers were using something in the studio to make her sound that talented. That’s right. No one believed someone could sing as well as Mariah back in the day. Do these contestants really want to try to live up to that kind of talent?

“I Believe I Can Fly” – R. Kelly

I was a teenager when this song came out (yes, I’m old) and I remember how boring it was when it was released and the song is equally as boring every time someone sings it at their audition or on the “American Idol” stage. Pick something, anything else I beg of you.

“And I Am Telling You, I’m Not Going” – Jennifer Hudson

This song has been sung by countless singers but it was really over sung after Jennifer Hudson sang it in her audition and then again for “Dreamgirls.” Since Hudson, it happens to appear on every season of “Idol” with a female contestant wildly over singing the dramatic song. Next time, pick something else…maybe Adele?

“My Heart Will Go On” – Celine Dion

Like Whitney, Mariah, and even Elton John this is one diva that is way too over played on “Idol.” I know you love Celine and her overly sentimental lyrics and melodies but it’s time to find another diva to emulate on the “Idol” stage.
