Three Reasons Why Susan G Komen Should Not Support Planned Parenthood

COMMENTARY | In the fall of 2008, my wife and mother in-law participated in the amazing Susan G. Komen 3-Day event. I was able to witness first-hand the training and preparation that my family was required to do prior to the walk. There was not only mental and physical preparation for the event, but each participant was asked to raise around $2,000 to support Susan G. Komen’s mission of erasing breast cancer

To raise the funds, my family and I held a variety of fundraisers. We held a garage sale, my business donated money and we solicited members of our community. After a few months, my wife and her mother were finally ready to make the three-day journey to walk 60 miles in support of finding a cure to end breast cancer. Needless to say, the entire process was a life-changing event for our entire family.

In recent news, Susan G. Komen had severed all ties with Planned Parenthood and then reversed that decision stating that funding will now continue. Planned Parenthood received funding because 16 percent of its services for women are for cancer screening and prevention. Some conjecture that the split was due to the allegation that there is a link between abortions and breast cancer. Others believe that when it became public knowledge that funds went to Planned Parenthood donations started to cease.

For whatever reasons there are, I believe the original decision to split was prudent and responsible for the following factors.

First – Most individuals donated funds to the foundation with the belief that the majority of monies donated, directly support Susan G. Komen’s efforts to find a cure and erase breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen fund betrayed many financial supporters by digressing from breast cancer awareness and supporting an organization that murders the unborn.

Second -Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a non-profit organization. As a non-profit, they can allocate funds appropriately to whatever causes they deem appropriate regardless of public outcry.

Third – The U.S. Constitution guarantees each citizen the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I firmly believe that the Susan G. Komen philosophy embodies that vision while Planned Parenthood by providing abortions does not value life.

Mother Theresa warned at the 1994 National Prayer Breakfast, “And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another?…By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems. And, by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world… So abortion just leads to more abortion…”

In closing, if Planned Parenthood were to get rid of their abortions all together, I will support Susan G. Komen’s recent decision to continue funding.

Just my thoughts – if you agree or disagree feel free to comment.
