The History Behind Veterans Day

Veterans Day is an annual national holiday in the United States that is known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day elsewhere.

Originally dubbed Armistice Day, what we now call Veterans Day became a federal holiday back in the year 1918. It was entitled Armistice Day in honor of the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I. This holiday was originally created to honor the veterans of World War I specifically. However, after World War II and the Korean War, in the year 1954 it was changed to honor all veterans.

My own father is now 89 years old and is a military veteran who served in Iwo Jima among other places. Knowing his personal stories and those of other men and women who have served our country makes this day a special holiday to me. There are many ways to express your gratitude to our veterans. Fly your flag, or perhaps attend a special ceremony or parade to honor the veterans. These people have made many personal sacrifices to defend our country and uphold the liberties we all hold dear, so take this opportunity to tell them, in some small way, thank you.
