Recycled Bottle Top Crafts

Every since I was a young child, bottles tops have fascinated me. I have developed several interesting craft items using bottle tops over the years. The multiple designs on the tops make them a color display in whatever craft you choose.

Refrigerator magnets are an easy craft to make – simply hot glue a round magnet onto the back of the bottle top. Add a touch of femininity to the magnet by gluing lace to the back edge of the bottle top.

A bottle top trivet uses a base of polymer clay. Roll the polymer clay into a flat slab approximately ½-inch thick. Cut the polymer clay into a 6-by-6-inch square. Press the bottle tops into the clay approximately 1/16-inch apart. Make sure the bottle tops are side-by-side. Put the finished clay trivet on a cookie sheet. Bake the trivet at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Remove the trivet and allow it to cool. To prevent scratching, add a felt backing to the trivet.

Create a musical shaker instrument from 30 to 40 bottle tops. Place the bottle top on a piece of scrap wood so the front side of the bottle top is on the bottom. Place a 7-penny nail in the center of the bottle top. Hammer the nail through the center to create an opening. Repeat the process with the remaining bottle tops. String the bottle tops on a piece of 20-pound fishing line. Push the bottle tops together. Cut the fishing line so approximately 8-inches remain on each side of the bottle tops. Match the ends of the fishing line and tie a knot approximately 1-inch from the ends. Hold the fishing line in your hand and shake.

Make a grape trivet from bottle tops. Crochet around the bottle tops with green or purple crochet cotton or perle cotton. Sew the bottle tops together to create the shape of a grape bunch. Crochet green leaves to attach to the top of the grape bunch.

Fill a glass jar with bottle tops. Shake the jar periodically as you are filling it to make sure the bottle tops are haphazardly distributed throughout the bottle. Insert the stems of recycled flowers or flowers on a metal stem into the bottle tops for a very colorful display.
