Homemade Chicken Wire Basket

Decorate your home with homemade chicken wire baskets. Use the baskets to hold fruits, vegetables, napkins, magazines and yarn to mention a few. Hang a homemade chicken wire basket in the bathroom to store fancy hand soaps, washcloths, hair accessories and other small items.

Things You’ll Need:

16-gauge utility wire
Yardstick or tape measure
Wire cutters
1-inch chicken wire mesh

Instructions:

Step 1 – Measure and cut four pieces of 16-gauge utility wire into 60-inches long, ten pieces 40-inches long and eight pieces 30-inches long.

Step 2 – Match the ends of the four 60-inch pieces of wire. Twist the wire several times to form a spiral down the length of the wire. Secure the ends together by twisting. Shape into a large oval.

Step 3 – Match the ends of four of the 40-inches pieces of wire together. Twist the length of the wire to hold together. Repeat the process with four more 40-inch pieces. These two pieces become the ribs for the length of the basket.

Step 4 – Repeat Step 3 with the eight 30-inch long pieces of wire to create two ribs for the width of the basket.

Step 5 – Position the two 40-inch ribs across the length of the oval. Twist the ends around the oval to hold in place.

Step 6 – Position the two 30-inch ribs across the width of the oval. Twist the ends around the oval to hold in place.

Step 7 – Measure, mark, and cut an oval from the chicken wire with a wire cutters that is 28-inch diameter across the largest portion of the oval and a 20-inch diameter across the narrowest portion.

Step 8 – Center the wire basket over the oval of chicken wire. Fold the chicken wire around the wire frame bending the ends of the chicken wire over the frame. Cut off any excess. Clip V sections into the chicken wire to help mold it to the basket frame.

Spray paint the chicken wire the color of the specific rooms décor. Weave ribbon through the chicken wire to give it color.
