Genetics and Obesity

Obesity is a new and unusual situation in human history. Until about a hundred years ago, obese people were rare and were the butt of many jokes. These people were described in stories or plays as bizarre freaks. For example, Rabelais’ Gargantua.

For millions of years, humans lived in privation and constant pursuit of food, like all wild animals. Our food was mostly plants, supplemented by some animal products. It was basic, crude and low-calorie. For millions of years, we’ve genetically adapted to this type of food. We have a genetic mechanism of metabolic activation “software” that runs the digestive system, hormonal systems and other systems in the human body. This software was created by natural selection over millions of years. Human genes are not changed in one generation, or two generations, or even a hundred generations. It takes a million years and a lot of mutations to change the human genome.

None of us has personal reasons to be the world’s fattest person. Eating healthy foods, oil and no fat doesn’t require good genetic structure. On the other hand, we all have the genetic structure to be healthy if we eat the appropriate coarse food: plants and meat, in smaller portions. Our genetics dictates disease and destruction if we eat too much energy-intensive food. Weight loss is an imperative for all who desire to live long and happy lives.

Because the reasons for overeating are behavioral, cultural, and conscious, the weight loss process must be done in groups or in workshops. And any diet you decide to try should focus on the educational, psychological and medical aspects of weight loss..

Genetics are usually used as an easy, seemingly scientific excuse for staying fat. It’s easier to justify your lack of willingness to deal with your obesity, and continue distracting yourself. You tell yourself that because of your genetic defects, you can’t do anything. And you would be wrong. Genetics are a wonderful cover story if you want to feel right but stay fat and sick.

Unlike poor genetics, bad eating habits can change and improve. Since obesity is caused by bad eating habits, we can all help stop the spread of obesity
