For Those Who Need to Rock, We Salute You

To me, song lyrics communicate to me and motivate me more intensely that any other delivery system of words. A page a day calendar with a saying works great, but they are even better when set to music. In one Seinfeld episode, Elaine dates a guy with a theme song. She decided to grab one too; “Witchy Woman”. I still giggle just thinking of that episode but the truth is, I get a lot of inspiration from music. Here are a few lyrics that can set the tone for the day and get me going. Maybe you will grab one as your song.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. – The Beatles, The End
This is a very good Wednesday quote. When the shine of your goodwill has dulled a bit and you are sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. and cars seem to be cutting in front of you and you are just about to show the other car just how stupid you can be but: take a deep breath and think Beatles.

Your life is worth much more than gold. – Bob Marley, Jammin’
If you have been targeted by the office gossip or you just feel down and depressed, you probably need to put on some reggae. The lyrics could get you at least riled up and likely blissed out remembering some Carribean vacation all inclusive trip you took. The name Bob Marley should probably have some honorific like Sir or The Honorable as he has brought so many loving concepts to us in his music. If you can hear this song playing in your head, you will definitely have a sweeter day. Oh yeah. Alright.

You’re a shining star, no matter who you are. Shining bright to see, what you can truly be. – Earth, Wind, and Fire, Shining Star
Take even 1 minute to meditate on this one. Katy Perry has recently co-opted this theme for her “Firework” song with equal boost to your ego. Shining star for you to see, what your life can truly be.

A tongue can accuse and carry bad news, gossip is cheap and it’s low. But unless you’ve made no mistakes in your life, be careful of stones that you throw. – Hank Williams
Sometimes it’s not others that bring you down but you are harshing someone elses ride. Or, if they have been bringing you down, this song is like a piece of armor.

You don’t have to watch Dynasty to have an attitude. – Prince
I’m not sure if it’s great to have an attitude, but once in a while you have to straighten your shoulders and say, yes, I am cool enough to wear sparkly purple and some high heeled boots and today is the day I am making it work. Just give us your extra time and your kiss.

You’re living in your own private Idaho. – B-52’s, Private Idaho
You believe what you want to believe. You see, you don’t have to live like a refugee. – Tom Petty, Refugee
I think these go well together. Both songs are high energy barn burners that will get you swaying in your seat. We are all a bit crazy, If we can keep it a little quiet, we can also strengthen ourselves with it. Why yes, I do like the Grateful Dead. Why do you ask?

For Those Who are about to Rock,(we salute you) – AC/DC
This is completely motivational; whether you are checking in for your shift at the call center, or are off to see Metallica at Alpine Valley. Jack Black paraphrases it best in the film “School of Rock” as he is solemnly psyching up his students for the Battle of the Bands;
“We roll tonight
To the guitar bite
For those about to rock, we salute you”
