A Guide to ‘The Muppets’ Supporting Cast

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a few decades, or born rather recently, you probably know about Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. But if you aren’t too sure who some of the other Muppet characters are, here’s a quick rundown of a few more you should know for the premiere of “The Muppets.”

Animal

The barely articulate drummer, who mostly grunts and growls, plays in the Muppets house band, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Rumor has it at least some of the inspiration for his character came from Keith Moon, drummer for The Who. If that’s true, The Who only wishes they had such a cool band name.

Rowlf the Dog

Rowlf got his start on “The Jimmy Dean Show” and Purina Dog Chow commercials before joining “The Muppet Show.” He plays piano in the pit orchestra and occasionally with the Electric Mayhem, but is most known for his role as Dr. Bob on the Muppets soap opera “Veterinary Hospital.”

Statler and Waldorf

The heckling eye-in-the-sky of the Muppets, Statler and Waldorf frequent the balcony box of the show, offering their critiques and making final comments for the episodes. They are a puppet version of grumpy old men — and we love them for it.

Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker

Dr. Honeydew is the scientist of The Muppets, who loves to come up with wacky inventions with his assistant, Beaker. Of course, his experiments have a tendency to go wrong, and poor Beaker tends to suffer for it. Honeydew has been in every Muppet movie, so keep an eye out for him come Thanksgiving at your local theater.

But watch for all your favorites if you’re already a fan, and make some new favorites for the kids, as The Muppets come to a whole new generation when they hit your local theater just in time for Thanksgiving Day. What better way to find a movie the whole family will enjoy?
