Are there different types of depression?
Q: Is one an actual chemical imbalance, and another simply a habitual mental state brought about by the individual themselves? Can this habit of persistant negative thoughts actually lead to a chemical imbalance? Are there different types of depression, and if not, when does it cross over into being an actual chemical imbalance? Where does the chemical imbalance come from, and do you believe that it is possible to “balance” yourself out again without the aid of medication?
A: Yes there are different types of depression, just as there many different types of mental illnesses. I believe persistant negative thinking can lead you into feeling like you are depressed. I also know that chemical imbalances can be responsible for depression as can your living enviroment, relationships etc. Chemical imbalances can be heriditary. I don’t really know when such things cross over or if they are already within our bodies. Yes balancing yourself out without medication is possible, however, it will take a lot of work on your part to get there. Medication can be more effective and work quicker in some people. However, a therapist will always be your best bet in getting the help you need to deal with depression. Depression can lead to suicide, or suicidal thoughts. I urge anyone with these to seek professional help…its not a bad thing. Its not any worse than having to have a broken bone fixed. Mental changes, mood changes can be life threatening. Please educate yourself, there is a lot of information on the net. And there are free clinics and sliding scale fees for therapy.
