How can i tell if its the torque converter, planetary’s or something else that went in my transmission?

Q: I have a 98 plymouth voyager 3.3l flex fuel and 4 spd auto, i was driving down the road when it stopped working rpms went up speed went down, it acted as if it was shifted into neutral, when i shift i can hear the tranny switching gears and see the rpms fluctuate but the van wont move, when i put it in reverse it you hear it engage and it will kinda kick forward a little bit maybe a half inch or less movement but thats it, i never had a problem with it or sign of anything going wrong it has 265,000 miles on it top end at least of motor was rebuilt. there is a noise about every 20 seconds or so coming from by the bell housing and where the cv shafts enter the tranny it isnt very loud but sounds the same as ripping a piece of duct tape off a roll fast, or even a little like the sound of a clutch on a cordless drill when its set low to slip but the noise doesnt last long maybe a second or so when it does. seems to travel through the tranny u can also hear it near the one cover plate closest to the drivers side wheel on the side of the tranny, ase tech at the dodge dealership said it sounds like either the torque converter or flex plate, or if not that then the planetarys (2of them in the tranny) or a pin thats in them. wouldnt there be more of a noise if it was the planetarys like longer duration or louder.grinding? how can i tell if it is just the converter as that is alot cheaper to repair even the planetarys shouldnt be too much compared to a new tranny or rebuild. i had it scanned prior to the problem for a service engine light but the only code was p0401 egr valve insufficient flow, it was jerking or kicking when it would shift but i attributed that to a worn bushing on the front center motor mount could that have been the converter slipping? also if it is just the converter or planetary what is the likelyhood that the rest of the tranny is fine or has some problems? i havent been able to get it towed to my house yet to drop the pan to see if there is anything in it or if the cooler got plugged up but it ran perfectly fine then instantly nothing no noise or anything it just wont move. the trans does hold in park and i cant see any visable failure in the cv shafts. fluid is slightly brownish but not bad doesnt smell burnt werent any shavings when i pulled the dip stick any ideas about this? im planning on taking the pan off and if there is nothing in it getting a new converter and replacing that along with fluid and filter and possibly the rebuild kit they sell at advance for 180 but i dont know whats in it yet, money is tight for me and that is the least cost but i need it fixed asap, i have experience working on cars for years but never did anything with a transmission, also could it be the tcc solenoid or lockup clutch i heard upplugging that could be a temporary fix i dont think its the computer control system or solenoid or cooler but it doesnt make any really bad noises so im hoping the tranny is ok just something minor. any help will be appreciated i have tried to provide as much detail as possible.
