West End, or Should I Say Best End!

This last December, back in 2010, I had the privilege of traveling abroad to London. The intent was an academic study abroad, but it felt much more like a cover for “educational vacation”. Trust me, it doesn’t get a whole lot better than this. The trip lasted two weeks, and in that time my group covered an enormous amount of territory. If there was a museum for it, we went to it. If there was a solid show in town, we tried to see it. Rarely was there any time to sit on our rumps or dawdle. We were on turbo from the get go.

Overall London is truly a wonderful place. You get the feeling of a giant city with hundreds of years of history but, without much rubbish or risk of safety. Like most European countries, London has very strict gun laws and regulation. Citizens just don’t have guns, so you never feel like you’re going to be in any mortal danger. The only dodgy impression was Soho, but even then it wasn’t anything serious. We actually found one of the best pubs of the trip there. As for the rubbish, London does a superb job of keeping their streets and sidewalks clean. New York could learn a lesson there.

The highlight of my experience was definitely split between the museums and the theatre. The West End is a very beautiful example of proper theatre. With historic buildings and solid shows, the experience really shines. Later this year however, I went to New York and saw a series of shows as well. I have to be honest and say that the Broadway theatre just had polish. The performances were stronger and more heartfelt. But, I don’t mean for this to diminish the West End. They recently had a Tony winning show come over. Regardless, I’d say check out the shows and the history.

I hope you catch the gist of what I really loved while being in London. It’s a country with hundreds of years of history, something you really don’t find stateside. If you haven’t been, I’d suggest you save up some cash and make a point to visit. Just remember that the country is not cheap and the pubs close at eleven. While you’re at it, give the pear cider a go. You won’t be disappointed.
