Things to Do Near Lake Casitas, California

We’ve been to Lake Casitas Recreation Area twice now, and have had a blast both times. It’s not just the campground, it’s where it is situated that makes it fun to return to again and again. Here are a few of the things to do when you visit the area. The recreation area is situated near both Ventura, CA and Ojai, CA. These cities provide access both to beaches and the mountains.

Boating/Fishing: Lake Casitas itself is a drinking water reservoir, so swimming is not permitted. However, it is one of the best bass fishing lakes in California. There are also boat rentals for those who just want to get out on the water and enjoy the experience. All watercraft does have to be inspected prior to entering the lake, in order to prevent contamination by a particularly nasty barnacle.

Biking: Even if you don’t bring your own bicycle, you don’t have to be without. There is a very extensive bike rental place, and it includes more than just two wheelers. Surrey type vehicles suitable to families (or bunches of kids from time to time) are also available.

Food: Whether it’s a really good breakfast (Pete’s Breakfast House is great) or perhaps a tearoom (there is one in Ojai), there are a plethora of choices when it comes to food. Of course, it is a campground so you can always cook for yourself.

Historical Sites: There are several historical sites near the lake. The one we visited this last trip is the San Bueneventura Mission. It’s the ninth and last mission started by Father Junipero Serra. It is also still a functioning Catholic church. We visited on a Sunday, and when we looked at the sanctuary the first time, Mass was still being said. Needless to say, we waited until it was over before entering the area.

Scenic Driving: The recreation area is quite large, and there are a lot of small farms, forested hills and open areas to drive through. Some areas are privately owned, but many parts are parkland. It’s nice to get away from the city for a while and see nature.

Water Park: This is actually at the recreation area, and is usually filled to capacity shortly before it opens. We haven’t gone in yet, but those who have enjoyed it a lot. It’s great when the weather is in the mid to upper nineties as it was for our last visit.

Wine Tasting: Ventura County isn’t well known for its wineries, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any. In fact, there is a wine trail, and those we’ve visited have been quite nice. Our favorite, by far, is the Herzog Winery in Oxnard. Not only do they make great wine, there is a self guided tour above the winery floor that allows you to see the processes they use to make and bottle their wines.

Lake Casitas is a good destination for families, empty nesters and retirees. It’s near several cities. In fact, Ojai is only a few miles from the campgrounds, so there is stuff to do for everyone. Shopping, dining, wine tasting, and most importantly, camping are all available here.
