The Gates by Rachael Wade Book Review

Please note:

The Gates by Rachael Wade is the second installment of the Resistance Trilogy; it is not meant to be read as a stand-alone novel.

Summary:

Camille Hart and her vampire boyfriend, Gavin Devereaux, return to Amaranth and take their plans to destroy the evil vampire queen to the next level, but things don’t go quite as planned. Deception, secrets
and betrayal meet Camille, Gavin and their group on the other side, resulting in an all-out war amongst the humans, vampires and witches. Every friendship is pushed to the limit, love is tested beyond measure and the entire war is at stake. In the end, only the strongest can survive.

My Review:

I have so much to say about The Gates, but I am going to keep it rather brief so that I don’t spoil anything for those of you that have been waiting to read it.

I waited rather impatiently for months to get a chance to find out what happens to Camille and Gavin in the second installment of the Resistance Trilogy. I felt like I was left on edge after the completion of Amaranth, wondering what would happen next. After reading The Gates, I feel exactly the same – I can’t wait for the next installment so that I can find out what happens!

Twists and turns keep the pages turning (even when you’re still up reading at 4 am) and it’s very easy to become invested in the story, which is what I love the most about Rachael Wade’s writing. Her stories are not merely stories, they are journeys. Her characters are so very real and you can’t help but ache for Camille and Gavin, loathe Samira and adore many of the characters in the Resistance group. Above all, I love how you can’t predict the next page. I grow very bored with stories that seem to follow a predictable story line – The Gates does anything but.

Overall, I would recommend The Gates to anyone who loves vampire romance novels but is tired of the same-old-vamp-romance-story. The Resistance Trilogy takes an interesting approach to the vamp romance and the action is definitely more suspenseful than many of the other books I have read in the genre.

I would like to add one other note, however. I would not recommend The Gates for younger audiences. There are some explicit scenes in there – not enough to qualify it as erotica, but definitely some hot and heavy stuff that you wouldn’t want younger readers exposed to.
