My wife sat down to watch a movie a couple nights ago and, as always, we were in the mood for some popcorn. However, we were out of microwave popcorn, couldn’t find the lid to our popcorn popper and couldn’t run to the store because I hadn’t gotten paid yet.
I had almost given up on having that as a snack but remembered we had a bag of Utz Buttered Popcorn in our pantry. While this wouldn’t normally be my first choice, I really didn’t have any other alternatives and we ended up having that instead.
Even though I have had other Utz products in the past and have been pretty happy with the majority of them, I am always a bit skeptical when it comes to pre-popped popcorn. One of the main reasons for this is most brands I’ve tried taste very stale (even when the bag hasn’t been opened and hasn’t expired yet) and I wasn’t sure if that was going to end up being the case with this brand as well.
As it turns out, I didn’t need to worry about that at all. The Utz brand was actually very fresh tasting. It wasn’t as fresh as freshly popped. But, it was much better than I was expecting it to be and definitely better than the majority of other brands we’ve had.
Another thing I’ve noticed with products like this is a lot of companies don’t use high quality popcorn. Instead, they use the kind of popcorn that has a lot of hard crap that gets stuck in your throat and teeth. Again, that wasn’t the case with this brand. The popcorn seemed to be pretty reasonable when it came to overall quality and I enjoyed it almost as much as the popcorn we would normally make in our popper.
One other surprise when it came to this brand was the buttered popcorn actually tasted like it had butter on it. This might sound like a strange comment to make but most other “buttered” brands don’t taste like they have butter. Most of them actually taste like they have a lot of salt and some yellow coloring. Needless to say, I appreciated this.
This still wouldn’t be my first choice for movie nights (and we made sure to buy a box of microwave popcorn once I got paid). But, I was still pretty impressed with it and would not mind having a bag of this as a snack in the future. If you haven’t tried this, I recommend it.
