Recap: ‘Bones,’ Season 7, Episode 1, ‘The Memories in the Shallow Grave’

“Bones,” Season 7, Episode 1, “The Memories in the Shallow Grave” begins when an unfortunate paintball commando falls on top of a corpse – twice. It is enough to put one off simulated war.

Spoilers surely follow.

The mystery, which slowly unravels thanks to the work of our intrepid team, concerns a young woman who got a missing person’s report issued on her twice. The first time was after head trauma had put her in a fugue state, which meant that she had lost memories of who she was. She assumed another identify, which got her involved in armed robbery. The second time was when she began to recover her memories and came under the care of a doctor who unfortunately had a gambling debt and was very interested in the loot of a job the woman had pulled in her other identity.

The interesting part of the episode was, however, Bones and Booth adjusting to their new relationship. There is always the danger when a TV couple finally does the dirty deed that, with the sexual tension released, there is not much more to say. But Bones and Booth are, thankfully, encountering other issues, like how does the intrepid FBI agent and the emotionally stunted forensic anthropologist become a couple? This is necessary because they are about to become a family.

Bones going through hormone-triggered crying jags and then trying to analyze them while the water works flow is a hoot. Bones is undergoing feelings she is unfamiliar with. She is pregnant, finally in love with her federal sweetie, and still has to maintain her Spock-like objectivity to solve the case at hand.

One piece of advice for Booth: She is beautiful, smart, and rich. Enjoy the latter and don’t get too hung up on this “50/50″ nonsense. Buy the big house and hire the nanny for the kid so you and Bones can continue to have adventures.

And raising a child will be an adventure for Bones, who will no doubt have interesting, if perhaps impractical ideas along those lines. One cannot wait to see how that turns out.

Finally, it’s a bit of bold foreshadowing for Booth to announce that it will be Bones who will ask for his hand in marriage. Will that actually happen? And, if so, under what circumstances?
