Melatonin as a Natural Sleep Aid

I’ve had trouble falling asleep for the past couple years. When I went to my medical doctor, he gave me a prescription for a sleep aid and told me to try it. While it did help me to fall asleep, I noticed it caused other side effects, such as drowsiness upon awakening and throughout the day, depression and it was getting quite addictive.

My body quickly became immune to it and I had to keep taking more in order to sleep at night. I then became addicted to the prescription sleep aid. I realized that while I was on the drug, I was becoming severely depressed, so I gradually weaned myself off of it and experienced some pretty bad withdrawal symptoms.

In the past year, I found a new doctor who practices holistic healing. He had advised me to take the natural supplement, Melatonin. I was reluctant at first, thinking that it really wouldn’t work for me. Because I was skeptical about it, I didn’t buy it when he first told me to try it.

However, after trying over the counter sleep aids and a prescription sleep aid with too many side effects, I thought maybe I should give it a try. A few weeks later, I bought myself a bottle of Melatonin.

I’ve been taking the Melatonin ever since. I take 3mg about a half hour before bedtime. Within a half hour or so, I drift peacefully off to sleep. My mind stops racing and I feel myself falling into a deep sleep. It is such a great feeling.

I have not experienced any side effects since taking the Melatonin. The only effects I’ve noticed are positive ones. I get better sleep, which helps put me in a better mood. I am not drowsy in the morning, I wake up feeling refreshed.

People respond to medicines, herbs and supplements differently. What works for me, may not work for someone else. However, I felt the need to express how much this supplement has helped me. I think it has also helped alleviate some of my depression.

If I do not take Melatonin for a couple nights, I do not experience any withdrawal symptoms. Melatonin for me, has been an excellent sleep aid and I would recommend it to others to try. Of course, talking to your doctor first, would be a good idea, before trying any new supplements. It was worth the try for me.
