Triple H makes his entrance to the ring sporting the referee shirt; of course he has appointed himself as the special guest referee for this match. CM Punk makes his way to the ring and he gets a great ovation from the crowd. On the other hand, John Cena didn’t get the best reception. The Los Angles crowd was primarily behind CM Punk.
CM Punk and Cena lock up and Punk backs John into the corner. Punk breaks the lock up clean. Cena puts CM Punk into an armbar to avoid another lock up. Punk gets out of the armbar and puts Cena into a headlock. Cena fights out of the headlock, but Punk responds with a huge shoulder block. Both Superstars lock up once again and Cena takes Punk down to the mat, and then breaks the hold, and both Superstars get back up to a vertical base. CM Punk gets behind Cena and put him in a waistlock, but Cena countered it with a headlock, which took Punk to the ring mat. Punk gets out of the headlock, but John Cena hits Punk with a shoulder block of his own.
John Cena takes Punk down to the mat and begins to focus on Punk’s arm and his shoulder. John Cena gets Punk and puts him in a rear chin lock, followed by a Head Lock. CM Punk battles back out and responded with a huge dropkick. CM Punk put Cena in a rear chin head lock of his own, and he wrapped his legs around John Cena’s chest.
Cena fought back up to a vertical base, and landed a gut wrench suplex on Punk, but CM Punk kicked out at two. Cena put Punk in another rear chin lock, and hit Punk with a Fisherman Suplex, followed by another rear chin lock. Punk gets back up and Cena slams Punk, goes off the ropes and lands an elbow. Cena puts Punk in another rear chin lock. Punk gets up to his feet and responds with a big boot to the face of Cena. CM Punk picks Cena up and lays his knees on John Cena’s midsection. Then CM Punk Irish whips Cena off the ropes and lands a knee to the gut of Cena.
Punk landed a series of head butts to the chest of Cena, and Cena kicked out at two after a pinfall attempt by Punk. Punk focuses on John Cena’s midsection. Cena attempted the STF submission, but Punk kicked Cena away and Cena went to the ring apron. Punk attempted to suplex Cena back inside the ring, but Cena refused. Instead, CM Punk hung Cena on the top rope and landed a dropkick that sent Cena outside to the ring floor.
John Cena to got back into the ring, and CM Punk began to land a series kicks to the chest, followed by a senton splash. Punk locked in an impressive submission, but Cena stood up with Punk on his back, and turned the submission into an impressive side slam. Cena avoided a clothesline and landed a huge shoulder block, and Punk caught him with a knee to the face after Cena tried another shoulder block.
Punk attempted his high knee in the corner, but Cena avoided the knee and landed the series of shoulder blocks. Cena attempted the back body drop but Punk countered it with a snap mare maneuver and landed the high knee in the ropes. Then CM Punk locked in an impressive clutch submission on Cena.
Cena fought out of the submission and locked in the STF, but Punk reversed it with the anaconda vice. John Cena refused to quit and turned the tides with his STF submission. CM Punk was able to get to the ropes, thus breaking the hold. Punk throws Cena over the top rope to the outside. Punk hits the ropes and dives through on top of Cena, sending Cena right into the barricade. CM Punk’s face collided into the barricade as well. Both mean were completely out after CM Punk’s dive.
HHH counts all the way to nine, and refuses to let the match end by count out. Instead, HHH goes to the outside of the ring and placed Cena and Punk back into the ring himself. Cena and Punk get back to a vertical base, and they trade blows in the middle of the ring with the crowd favoring Punk. Cena attempts the AA, but Punk fights out it, and receives a rare dropkick from Cena. Cena hits the five knuckle shuffle, and attempts the AA, but Punk counters in a roll up for a two count. Cena attempts a roll up of his own, but Punk bridges out and kicks Cena in the head, and Cena kicks out at two.
Punk attempts the G2S, but Cena counters it with a big splash in the corner of the ring. Cena slammed Punk down to the mat, and Punk kicked out at two. Cena climbed to the top rope, but Punk landed a high knee and Cena fell down back inside the ring. Punk lands a bulldog from the second rope and lands only a two count after landing the move.
Punk goes out to the ring apron and enters the ring again with back with a springboard dive, but Cena counters the move with his STF. Punk makes it to the ropes after going through the effects of the STF. Cena lands the AA, but only gets a two count, because CM Punk kicks out. Cena argues with Triple H for a short time, and Cena goes to the top rope. Cena misses the leg drop, and Punk lands the GTS for only a two count.
CM Punk stares at Triple H and shows disappointment. CM Punk climbs the top turnbuckle and lands a elbow drop, but Cena stills manages to kick out off the maneuver. CM Punk was obviously frustrated and it showed on his face afterwawds. Suddenly, Cena rolled up Punk for a near three count, and Cena delivered a series of punches to Punk. Punk responds with a series of kicks and another GTS. CM Punk attempts to pin Cena and Triple H counts it without noticing Cena’s foot was on the ropes. CM Punk is still the WWE Champion.
John Cena expresses his anger to HHH, but eventually leaves. CM Punk poses with his WWE Title on the announcement table. Triple H attempts to shake CM Punk’s hand, but Punk declines. HHH raises Punk’s hand in victory despite Punk’s decline, and walks up the entrance ramp clapping the entire time.
Suddenly, Kevin Nash emerges and lands a huge big boot followed by the jackknife powerbomb on Punk. CM Punk is laid out in the ring and HHH looks puzzled as Nash leaves the ring through the crowd. Del Rio races in and lands a kick to the side of Punk’s head. Then, Alberto Del Rio pinned CM Punk for the three count to become the new WWE Champion for the first time ever.
