6 Strategies for a Natural Childbirth

When my aunt gave me an enormous stuffed bear during my pregnancy, it was intended for my son, but it ended up making my natural childbirth more “bearable.”

You can’t plan for everything you will need during labor, but I came up with 6 strategies and tools for coping with natural childbirth.

If anyone claims you can have a totally “pain free” natural childbirth, I would never believe it. For me, the best I could hope for was to resist my temptation to scream out for the epidural or medications. Although I did not end up having a home birth as I had hoped, I did have a natural or un-medicated childbirth with my older son.

Heat up the tub

Since I gave birth to my son in January, I had a terrible time getting hot water for my bath. I had to boil a big pot of water on the stove in order to bring hot water to the tub. I wish I had anticipated the problem ahead of time. At times, a hot bath was the only thing that eased by “discomfort” or what may be more accurately described as excruciating pain.

Line up the massage volunteers

Although there were times I did not want to be touched during labor, receiving a massage during labor made an enormous difference. Since I had back labor with one of my sons, I found a back massage extremely helpful. We used olive oil for the massage.

Get out the birthing ball

I use an exercise ball when I’m exercising, but I never expected to use it for my natural childbirth. The movement of the ball took pressure off my stomach and helped me rest while still being in the ideal position.

Enlist the help of a doula or midwife

I used a midwife for my pregnancy, but a friend of mine had an amazing natural childbirth by hiring a doula. The doula made sure her birth plan was followed by everyone on the team. The doula remembered all the little things.

Take a walk

Experts say it’s important to stay at home during pre-labor. It’s also a good time to take a walk in nature. I found a loop near my house that was not too far away from the house, yet gave me a chance to enjoy the sunshine, fresh air and nature. Walking helped my labor speed along.

Become a wet noodle

My labor coach explained that I would need to breathe using my diaphragm so that my muscles would relax. Her example was to become like a wet noodle. It did help ease the pain of contractions.

Having a natural childbirth made me feel energized and alive. It gave me the confidence I needed to care for my newborn son.
